Firefighters in Padang, Indonesia, rescued a monkey whose neck had got tangled in overhead telecommunications cables on Sunday 16 October.

They arrived on the scene on Sunday afternoon and worked hand in hand to release the monkey, a southern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca Nemestrina) whose neck was caught in an internet cable belonging to telecommunications company Telkom.

The incident happened on on Jalan Sudirman (Sudirman Road) in Jati Baru, Padang Timur District, Padang City.

According to the Padang Fire Department, a former local who was passing through the area saw the trapped monkey and reported it.

"Luckily the monkey was okay. After we released it, it immediately ran somewhere," said Sutan Hendra, the Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD [National Disaster Management Agency] Padang.

Six personnel were involved in the heartwarming rescue.
