Hundreds of workers, socialists and their supporters held a rally in Istanbul on Sunday 16 October.

The Workers' and Labourers' Union called the rally against growing unemployment and the rapidly rising cost of living.

The rally also came in the wake of a mining disaster in Turkey that killed at least 41 people and which government critics have blamed on corporate greed and official negligence.

Many labour unions and political parties attended the rally.

After the speeches, Grup Vardiya gave a concert and participants in the rally danced halay (Turkish folk dance) accompanied by music.

During the rally Ayşen Uyan read a joint press release (02:24-03:46): "We have no choice but to fight for our rights and unite. There are those who grow the struggle for equality, freedom and socialism in these lands. There are workers who resist arbitrary dismissals and the usurpation of their right to unionise and organise.
