Swollen river breaks through sandbag levee flooding nearby homes in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a swollen river broke through a sandbag levee flooding nearby homes in Thailand.
Footage shows the water bursting through the one-metre-tall makeshift barrier, sending a torrent into resident Praiwan Lasee's home in Nakhon Pathom province on October 13.
Praiwan said she had installed the barrier after the region was battered by heavy rain. She feared the floods would damage the furniture in her store and submerge her guava orchard.
She said: ‘The canal behind my house connects directly to the river, so I had to put up the bags. The water gushed into my house and destroyed everything inside within 10 minutes.
'It floods every year, but I'm surprised at how bad it is this time. The flood was as deep as my waist.'
Praiwan added that her pet squirrel had drowned in the deluge, while more than 10 motorcycles parked near the sandbag wall were damaged.
The shopkeeper added: 'Luckily, we shut off the electricity in time so nobody was electrocuted. I also parked my car at a nearby temple before this happened.'
Thailand has experienced severe flooding this year.
Meteorologists have blamed climate change for the sustained heavy rain, which has been hitting the Thai capital and provinces around the country causing heavy floods for several weeks.
Thailand's Center for Climate Change and Disaster claimed the coming months could see heavier, longer rainfalls, due to 'climate change'.
Local media reported that the country has this year seen 'an unusually sustained and persistent rainy season'.
The heavy rain has been compounded by the deluge from Typhoon Noru, which dumped water in the northeast region of the country, causing rivers flowing into the central region to swell.
