This is the bizarre moment a lawyer was attacked for filing a police complaint against a comedian who made jokes about the Thai government.

Serial complainer Srisuwan Janya was speaking outside the building yesterday October 18 before submitting a crime report over funnyman Udom Taepanich who made gags about the junta.

The comedian likened the country to 'a a plane with security guard in the cockpit instead of a pilot' - sparking fury from millions of nationalist Thais. He followed that with several other tepid jokes about politics.

However, while ultra-royalist monarchy supporter Srisuwan was proselytising about the dangers of making jokes about the establishment, Weerawich Runruangsiriphol stormed over and threw several punches and kicks at him.

He was eventually restrained as police emerged to calm the situation.

Weerawich, who has since received hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of donations from members of the public, said: 'I intended to teach Srisuwan a lesson, there are even policemen that I know who want to slap him, too.

'I took a day off work just to come here to express my stance on democracy, which is, that people are allowed to have different opinions.

'This country belongs to the people, not any specific person.

'I will not run away and I will accept it if I am summoned for assault. I believe I did the right thing, I kept the promise to my people.'

Weerawit is a political activist who is staunchly opposed to the present administration and has taken part in mass protests against the military regime.

Srisuwan defended making a police report about the comedian.

He said: 'The comedian's jokes disrupt law and order, which is a breach of the Criminal Code. National security could be compromised.

'This is my belief and I'm not connected with the government. I have made complaints against the government, too.'

Despite the activist lawyer's anger, the Thai government laughed off the comedian's jokes.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said it was 'just entertainment' and said people could 'make up their own minds' about the comedian.
