Italian students clash with police over right-wing event at La Sapienza University in Rome
Around 50 students clashed with Italian police in front of the University La Sapienza in Rome yesterday (October 25).
Protesters were demonstrating against an event organised by the right-wing student association Azione universitaria when the clashes started. Young people shouted, "fascists out of this university" to oppose the invitation of Daniele Capezzone, a member of the party Brothers of Italy, and Fabio Roscani, president of Gioventù Nazionale, a youth wing of the same party.
The police used batons to drive back demonstrators when a group tried to enter the building, and another wanted to hang a banner reading "Fascists out of La Sapienza University".
A few students were injured in the clashes.
At least one person was arrested. The police said that a demonstrator was blocked after he hit officers with a spear.
The police's handling of the demonstration was widely criticised, however, police officers claim that the use of batons became "necessary" when protesters forced their entrance into the building.
Ludovica, a 21-year-old woman who attends the University spoke to Newsflare.
“At the beginning I didn’t understand what was happening. I could hear a group of people protesting during our lecture inside the building. During my break, I went to the external courtyard. It looked like an innocent protest at first, but then, the number of people joining it suddenly increased and I found myself in the middle of the clashes. It was a surreal and unexpected moment. I was scared of getting injured”.
When commenting on organising an event led by the right-wing association, she said: “I believe that freedom of expression can’t not be called as such if it is not guaranteed”.
As for the handling of the protest, she said: “The police could have acted differently, however, I must say that a group of young people was quite violent and wanted to break into the building. Police officers asked people to leave the premises many times, or to protest a little bit further from the entrance to avoid what happened. The riot police units arrived later on, only when the crowd became unmanageable. What happened could have been avoided by both sides”.
The incident sparked a debate over the balance between protest handling and freedom of expression protection.
