Massive tree falls on car nearly crushing driver in Thailand
This is the shocking moment a large tamarind tree collapsed onto a woman's car in Thailand.
Footage shows the roadside tree toppling over as the driver, Thanaporn Chantakunanon, 35, was crossing a junction in Pattaya, Chonburi province, on October 23.
Thanaporn was uninjured but badly shaken by the incident that caused the closure of the route for two hours.
She said: 'I've lived in Pattaya for over ten years and nothing like this has ever happened to me.
'Because the event occurred in Pattaya City, I am hoping that local officials will assist me in repairing my car which has been totally wrecked.'
Pattaya City Mayor Poramat Ngampichet said the tree had been weakened by termites and agreed to pay the driver a compensation of 10,000 THB (263 USD).
He said: 'The city does have the means to assist in force majeure events. We will establish a committee to explore what we can do to help.'
Thanaporn said she has yet to receive the money as she was unavailable on the day of the payout.
The Pattaya Botanical Department later explained why the tree fell. In a statement, it said: ‘The inside of the tree has been hollowed out by termites.
‘Additionally, the frequency of rainstorms during the previous monsoon season had weakened it further.'
