A tropical depression lashed the central Philippines on Wednesday leaving dozens of homes underwater.

Heavy rains submerged properties in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental province, prompting more than 1,000 residents to evacuate on October 26.

Giovani Enabe, chief of the city's disaster management office, said: 'The rain was so strong and the Bateria river overflowed. Others we had to evacuate forcibly.'

The refugees - most of whom lived in low-lying areas near the riverbanks - temporarily stayed at the city's gymnasium while waiting for floods to subside.

No missing persons were reported, authorities said.

State weather agency PAGASA said the inclement weather was caused by the trough of a tropical depression battering Negros Oriental province as it approached the Philippines.

The weather system intensified into a tropical storm on Thursday morning and was given the international name 'Nalgae.'
