Footage shows the holiday maker gamely scaling the oil-slicked piece of wood to reach money attached further up, at a buffalo racing event in Chonburi province on October 12.

To improve his grip, he tried rubbing sand on both his palms and the pole before making a second attempt, this time with the help of some villagers.

Onlooker Somdat Prajit said: 'He wanted to try and he thought it was easy. I'm glad people from other countries are enjoying Thai traditions.'
