Elephants rescued from well they had fallen into at a farm in central India
Three elephants were rescued after they fell into a well in central India's Chhattisgarh.
The incident happened in Dugli forest range of Dhamtari district on October 28.
Footage showed an excavator digging at the side of the well, apparently in an effort to make a slope for the elephants to climb out of, which one of them is seen to do shortly after.
According to a report, the three elephants were from a herd that was damaging crops as they passed through the area.
The three pachyderms fell into a well belonging to farmer Ramesh Netam but since it was night time no rescue was possible then.
Forestry department officials, including DFO (District Forest Officer) Mayank Pandey, reached the spot after being told about the elephants' plight.
The first two were rescued with the help of a solar pump next to the well. The animals were able to wrap their trunks around the structure and pull themselves out.
The third, which was too small to use that method, required an excavator to dig at the sides of the well, to make a slope for it to get out, as shown in the video.
Sand, wooden logs and searchlights were also used in the operation, which was relatively straightforward as the trapped animals were not restless.
