A cable bridge collapsed in Morbi town in Gujarat on Sunday 30 October, killing dozens according to local reports.

Reports say there were around 500 people on the bridge over the River Macchu at the time. Local officials say dozens have been killed.

Ambulances are taking the injured to hospitals and rescue operations are still underway for survivors.

According to local reports the bridge is over 100 years old and was recently reopened after months of renovation work.

As it was he weekend, many local families had come to the bridge to walk on it and take pictures -- a possible factor in its collapse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and asked the local government to speed up rescue work.

A big mishap happened here after a cable bridge collapsed in the Machchhu river , according to local reports there were around 500 people on the bridge that time , till now around 60 have been declared dead , though officially nothing has been announced yet . Ambulances have reached the spot to carry the injured to hospitals. Rescue operations are underway .

According to local reports this cable bridge is more than 100 years old made by Maharaja of Morbi , it was opened back again five days back after renovation work , from last 7 months the renovation work was going on on this bridge . due to weekend and after a long time when this cable bridge opened , many locals with their families came here and were taking photos and selfies as its like a heritage sites for locals . Due to excessive pressure the cable bridge collapse .
