Locals competed in an amusing boat race during a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand.

Officials of the Wat Talat Mai temple organised the celebration after floodwaters from recent heavy rain receded in Ang Thong province on October 28.

Footage shows teams composed of six villagers each furiously rowing across a stream to reach the finish line.

In the background, a band played traditional piphat music to liven up the festivities.

Village chief Chalom Yotthong said: 'The boat race is a tradition passed down through generations to build love and unity in the village. It also helps to teach the children how to row boats during a flood.'
