Unusual medical sighting of 8 underdeveloped fetuses found in 22-day-old baby's stomach in eastern India
In a bizarre discovery, eight underdeveloped fetuses were found in the stomach of a 22-day-old newborn in Jharkhand, India.
The incident happened at the Rani Children's Hospital in Ramgarh district, Ranchi on November 1.
Visuals showed the fetuses kept inside a plastic jar. According to a report, this is a very rare case, known as, 'Fetus in Fetu' (FIF). This happens when more than one baby is growing inside a womb. During embryo development, the cells of one embryo go inside the other, leading to the growth of the womb of the fetus itself.
According to a report, the child was born on October 10 but was admitted to the Rani Children's Hospital due to abdominal swelling. A CT scan was done and doctors suspected a tumor to be the cause.
However, surgery revealed eight underdeveloped fetuses from the infant's abdomen and it was all removed. Thanks to the effort of pediatrician Dr. Mohammad Imran, anesthetist Dr. Vikas Gupta, DNB student Dr. Uday and nurses at the hospital, saved the newborn's life.
To get eight fetuses in one baby's stomach is indeed a rare phenomenon and reportedly, there have been less than 100 such cases in the whole world.
