Monkeys shout in fear as young baboon gets caught by crocodile

This footage shows a young yellow baboon immersed in a puddle in the Tsavo river in Kenya. A huge group of monkeys sits by the water and stare at the scene.

All of a sudden, a long tail emerges from the puddle: it is a crocodile! The baboon isn't just having a bath, it is in danger.

The filmer, Nicholas, said: "I thought for one second that it was a big fight between baboons and that this one was escaping from the others in the middle of the puddle. Then I quickly saw that the baboon was not having a bath but was caught by a crocodile".

The clip features images of the poor monkey wriggling and trying to escape. Its arm is entirely inside the crocodile's jaws.

Nicholas said: "The most impressive was that the water puddle was surrounded by hundreds of baboons that were watching this drama. They were totally stressed and began to scream like crazy. When it decided to move, the crocodile was taking him back to the water and was drowning him. There was not a lot of water and it managed to keep its head out of it each time so that it could breathe".

The baboon was very smart as it decided not to move and wait for the right time to escape. The animal understood that moving represented the danger of being drowned deeper.

"After several tries, it managed to escape and joined the group. It was injured in the face so I can imagine that the crocodile caught him by the head while he was drinking in the river", said Nicholas.

The clip was filmed in Tsavo West National park, Kenya.
