This is the terrifying moment an armed robber smashed glass cabinets to steal gold from a shop in Thailand.

Footage shows the intruder wearing a black helmet and jacket while grabbing expensive necklaces, rings, and bracelets from a stall inside a mall in Ayutthaya province on November 4.

Witnesses said the unidentified suspect fired a shot at the cabinets to scare the employees away before looting the store of gold accessories weighing more than 1kg.

He then placed a PVC pipe bomb with a watch timer at the store entrance to scare away onlookers. A brave employee threw it outside the mall, but the bomb was later discovered to be fake.

Sena district police said they still track the robber, who escaped the scene aboard a black Fino scooter with jewellery worth 47,000 GBP.

Gold shop employee Patcharin, 38, said: "My colleague and I heard the man shout 'this is a robbery' before he fired a shot. We fled to the back of the store".

Onlooker Sarocha Sornkaewdara said: "I was at the phone shop in front of the gold jewellery store when the man arrived. It was so terrifying. He quickly left with all the gold".

No one was reported hurt in the incident, and officers are still looking for the thief. The mall's stall was also sealed off as forensic police gathered evidence.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Panya Amatsena, Deputy Inspector at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Police Station, said: "Officers have checked evidence from people at the shop who witnessed the robbery. CCTV is also being checked to help us trace the man. We are close to catching him so he needs to turn himself in before it is too late".
