Terrified residents cried for help as they were trapped on the roofs of flooded homes in the Philippines.

Footage shows families taking refuge above 10ft high structures when most of their houses were submerged in water following heavy rain in Misamis Oriental province on October 16.

Lecar Lazatin could be heard in the background sobbing while looking for his other family members.

She said: ‘It was such a traumatic experience. The water suddenly rose, and we had to flee. We could only climb up the roofs and escape the currents.'

The residents were later rescued by officers and taken to the evacuation centre. The deluge has since receded, but most families had to live in badly-damaged homes without funds for repair.

No one was reported hurt in the area, but tropical depression Obet reportedly left two people dead in another province of Cagayan.
