A woman has gone viral after sharing an incredible hack to keep your house warm during the cost of living crisis – and the long-term solution costs just £31.

Lydia Sear, 23, a brand manager from Brentwood, Essex, and her partner Richard, 25, came up with an idea to keep heat inside their home after finding a cheap steal on Amazon.

The pair were looking for an affordable solution to tackle the gaps in their floorboards when they came across a special foam product.

Revealing their secret on TikTok, the video has since racked up over 214,000 views with grateful users thanking the pair for the nifty trick.

The product was a 40-metre roll called DraftEx, which costs just £31 and is 8mm in width – but the couple says it has stopped the draft in their rooms.

To attach it, the savvy Lydia grabbed a nail file from her make-up bag.

"It turned out quite simple, you can either cut pre-measured strips, or pull directly from the roll," she told NeedToKnow.online

"You pinch and squeeze the roll into the gaps in the floorboards and use the roller to push it along the length of the gap.

"I used a nail file attached to my pen knife as I felt that was actually easier.

"As the foam is quite spongey, it can be stretched to fit into thinner gaps, and will expand and shrink along with the wood."

Sharing a clip of the hack on TikTok, she captioned it: "It's the small changes that count!", as the video reads: "PSA: the gaps in your floorboards can easily let heat out and therefore cost you more to keep your house warm.

The clip shows the gaps in the couple's floorboards, before Lydia uses the roll by tucking it into the gaps.

She also reveals how bouncy it is by squeezing it between her fingers as she pushes it into the gaps.

Social media users have been left stunned, with many cracking jokes or sharing their own solutions.

"Tories got us stuffing foam between our floorboards," wrote one user.

"Girl I'm council house poor I don't have real floorboards," joked someone else, with a smiling crying emoji.

Someone else added: “That’s actually not a bad idea. I’d be mindful that your cavity has ventilation underneath but apart from that, great idea!"

“I have this problem and was looking for a solution but couldn't find anything. Thank you,” said another user.

One person offered some additional advice, saying: “Try some window insulation film, you'll be glad you did."

"This is really clever Lydia!! ,” another user added, followed by three clapping emojis.

Someone else commented: "This would block drafts coming in rather than let 'heat escape' because hot air rises."

To which she replied: "Yep, and as hot air rises, it’s replaced by the cool air below, really don’t want a draft this winter!"

Lydia says the hack has drastically reduced the feel of the cold draft in her home, and has helped her and her partner's daily living without costing them a fortune.

She said: "It has definitely stopped the draft from spilling into the rooms, and I've noticed it more significantly when I've been walking around the house wearing socks.

"The downstairs rooms, where the main issue lies, don't feel as cold as I remember now, which is a good sign so I would definitely recommend it.

"As cost of living crisis is taking its toll, this is a cheaper alternative if people can't afford carpets but want a quick solution without breaking the bank."

Lydia and Richard have also come up with some other hacks during the cost of living crisis.

She said: "We recently had to buy new blinds and they came with the option to add thermal lining, this only applies if you have the cash and were going to buy some anyway but great addition!

"I have been looking into buying insulating film for windows, as getting double glazing is a massive expense all-in-one.

"You can buy special foil that goes behind your radiators to boost the heating from them and warm up the home faster.

"De-limescale your washing machine! The more limescale, the longer it takes for the machine to heat up the water as it has to get through the lime scale first.

"Use a smart home device where you can control the heating from your phone, this way I can make sure I'm not wasting heating time while I'm away.

"Open your curtains during the day, the sun allows in more heat than you'd think!

"I also have a draft excluder pillow that goes in front of the front door."
