Devotees held a remote-controlled boat race to raise funds for a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand.

As pandemic curbs were eased, residents organised the festive event for the Kathin ceremony or offering of robes to monks in Ang Thong province on November 6.

Footage shows the remote toy boats whizzing in the water and leaving a white trail as they zipped across the surface.

Proceeds from the race were donated to the Si Kul Chon temple.

The winner received 3,000 THB (80 USD) while the second and third placers will had 2,000 THB (54 USD) and 1,000 (27 USD) THB respectively.

Event organiser Pichet Sudchai, 40, said: 'I was raised in Ang Thong and I am accustomed to the traditional boat rowing competitions in the province.

'The tradition is no longer observed, so I wanted to introduce a new watersport by using RC boats instead.

‘I invited like-minded people to join and received good feedback.'
