Tourists gathered to watch a mesmerising cultural show during the annual Phimai Festival in northeast Thailand.

Crowds trooped to the Phimai Historical Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province for the event being held from November 9 to 13.

Within the ancient Khmer temple, the holidaymakers enjoyed dances inspired by the story of Khmer king Jayavarman VII.

Aside from the light and sounds show, this year's festival also marks the return of traditional long boat races since the pandemic began.

Siam Sirimongkol, Nakhon Ratchasima governor, said: 'This event has been organized to preserve and display the rich culture of the Phimai people.

'We want Thais in other regions and foreigners to learn more about our heritage.'

The Phimai Festival is one of the province's major attractions, drawing large groups of tourists yearly.
