Viral clip of motorist driving close to 5-year-old cyclist sparks heated debate online
A clip of a motorist passing a 5-year-old cyclist has gone viral after the boy's father posted it on Twitter.
The video was shared by presenter Jeremy Vine with the caption: "Look at how close this car approaches the child. Who is in the wrong? Is it the 5-year-old, or is it the driver of the Ford?"
Savid Javid, MP for Bromsgrove, replied saying: "The 5-year-old's father."
The footage, captured on November 3, in Kingston upon Thames, London, shows the father and son approach a section of the road made narrow by cars parked on either side.
The boy is heard asking his dad: "Should I pull over to the side?"
His father replies: "No you're fine, carry on."
The motorist doesn't stop and drives through the gap as the 5-year-old cycles through too.
His father is heard saying: "What you doing?!
"That drive absolutely should've stopped."
He later told Newsflare: "I was cycling with my 5-year-old son to his school, as we do every single day.
"In the video my son sees a car approaching in the opposite lane and asks if he should pull over. I instruct him, based on my years of experience and training, to continue but the driver does not give way as they're supposed to and continues to drive at my son."
