A male emu with a handful to manage – escorting 16 large chicks to drink from a claypan

The Australian Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second tallest living bird, only smaller than the Ostrich. Emus are flightless and may be up to 1.9 metres (6 feet) tall, may weigh up to 60 kilograms (130 pounds) and can sprint at 48 kilometres per hour (30 mph). Female Emus court males, and may have several mates and lay their huge, dark green eggs in several nests. The male Emu incubates the eggs, and usually has responsibility for their protection, defending them with grunts and kicks to drive predators away. This male Emu escorted sixteen chicks of various ages to a claypan in semi-arid Western Australia to drink, keeping watch as they did so.
