Indonesian martial artists demonstrate ancient silat fighting skills in muddy rice field

Shunning more conventional sports surfaces, two Indonesian martial artists demonstrated their ancient fighting techniques knee-deep in the mud of a rice paddy on Thursday 10 November.

The pair were demonstrating sequences of moves in a style known as Aglara Silat.

Silat, also known as Pencak Silat, is a family of related martial arts native to Indonesia and the wider Malay Archipelago.

It would more typically be practiced on dry ground or training mats, but these fighters were demonstrating their moves while wading in an inundated rice field in Tanah Datar Regency in West Sumatra Province.

The muddy demonstration has become a popular attraction for tourists in the area.
