This is the moment a soldier plunged 1,600 feet from a plane after his parachute failed to deploy during training in Indonesia.

Salman Krisnes, a member of the country's Quick Reaction Forces Command (Kopasgat), had been undergoing tactical parachuting exercises with other troops at the Sulaiman Air Platform in Bandung City, West Java, on November 8.

Video shows the soldiers floating in the skies in a line after hopping off the C-130 Hercules aircraft.

As the others drifted in the air, Salman was seen rapidly plummeting to the ground, his parachute fluttering limply in the wind.

The malfunctioning device apparently still slowed his descent to some degree as he miraculously cheated death and survived with a fracture on his right lumbar.

Colonel Gunawan, head of Kopasgat Information, said the soldier is currently recovering in intensive care at the Salamun Air Force Hospital.

He said: 'After the incident, the victim's condition is stable. He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.'

Gunawan added that an investigation has been launched to find the cause of the parachute mishap.

He said: 'There were several parachute ropes that were cut off when jumping from the plane.

'This case is being handled by a team to search the cause of the parachute's failure to expand properly.'
