This is the moment rescuers used a crane to hoist a calf that was stuck in a sewer drain for a week in Thailand.

Officers deployed the equipment after villagers reported the baby cow's predicament following heavy rain on November 12.

It had fallen down the 7ft deep drain and had been soaking in the filthy water for days.

The volunteers first lowered a stepladder down the narrow hole and climbed down to fasten ropes around the lost farm animal.

They then used the crane to lift the heavy bovine up to safety as it was in danger of drowning in the filthy water.

Useng Monong, 63, chairman of the Yala Agricultural Market Community, said the villagers had told him of the calf's predicament around a week ago.

He thought a rescue had already been conducted but was surprised when the locals told him the cow was still trapped days later, prompting him to call the Yala City animal rescuers himself.

He said: 'This kind of thing doesn't happen too often. Car accidents involving cows are more likely especially at night, because their owners release them to graze without taking precautions.

'I've asked the calf's owner to properly take care of his own cow so that other people who use the road to travel aren't inconvenienced.'
