Students from Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology are able to make paper from elephant dung.

Footage shows the dung being collected from the elephant enclosure at Saigon Zoo on November 17.

The faeces is then washed with water seven times. Fertilisers are incubated at 200 degrees Celsius for two hours before being dried and pureed.

The dung is then mixed with the fertiliser before being dried and moulded into sheets of A3 and A4 paper.

Nguyen Kieu Tuyet Ngan, a student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said: "The original idea was discussed and planned by the group and the teacher during the practice as a small exercise.

"The initial difficulty is that there is no specific process yet, although the team has consulted international documents and available materials, but the machinery is not complete, and all tools are rudimentary.

"If the mixing ratios are not balanced, the first product does not have the necessary certainty. Through the time of research and the balance of materials, the paper has become more sticky and supple"

Mai Khac Trung Truc, director of the Saigon Zoo, added: "Currently, the paper industry uses a lot of cellulose in plants, elephants are the type that eat plants as the main food, and the level of consumption is low.

"The chemical is also very low, the indigestible matter will be pushed out and people can use cellulose to make paper.

"Initially, it took me three years to complete this paper, the first time I wanted to put out this form to create a message that everyone wants to protect forest resources and protect elephants.

"The second message is to protect the environment by saving paper."
