Nine people were killed in a gas explosion in the town of Tymovskoye, on the Russian island of Sakhalin, at 5.30 am Moscow time. Among the victims are four children.

The cause of the incident is believed to be a gas cylinder that exploded in a five-story building.

Russian emergency services are now looking for more survivors of the incident. 33 people remain unaccounted for.
