Rip-off World Cup? English fan stunned by huge hotel price hikes ahead of kick-off

An English football fan was stunned by huge price hikes at hotels in Qatar, ahead of the World Cup's kick-off.

The filmer said he had been forced to change hotels three times because of extreme price rises, but that he was still faced with sky-high costs.

On Wednesday 16 November his then hotel room cost the equivalent of around 25 British pounds (30 US dollars) per night.

That was due to quadruple on Thursday so he went to another hotel where the price was about the same as before (£25).

He stayed there again on Friday, this time for £60, which was in fact a discount on what the hotel initially wanted (£90) for that night.

Faced with a possible £400/night bill on Saturday, the Englishman moved again, to a hotel charging £120.

But that hotel then put up the price to £750 for Sunday, which the 55-year-old fan was unable or unwilling to pay, so he checked out without anywhere to go.

Unlike many visitors, the devastated fan had not booked or paid for his accommodation in advance.

As well as blaming the hotels for profiteering, he also blamed the Qatari government, which he said has stakes in the hotel industry and could do something about it, but which instead is "holding guns to World Cup supporters heads".

He added: "Tonight I could end up on the beach or in a park. I never expected this at all as this is my fourth World Cup."

"The greed of both FIFA and Qatar is disgusting."
