Thousands of motorbike-riding football fans thronged the streets of Sorong in West Papua, Indonesia, waving enormous flags of their chosen World Cup teams on Sunday 20 November.

Residents of the seemingly soccer-mad city welcomed Qatar 2022 with their colourful convoys.

Among the flags on display were those of the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Argentina. Notably, Indonesia did not qualify for the tournament.

While local police did not give permission for the convoy, because they were concerned about public safety, the fans ignored that and carried on with what turned out to be a good-natured celebration of sport.

Thousands of residents in a city in Indonesia, to be precise in the city of Sorong, West Papua welcomed the Qatar 2022 World Cup event by holding a convoy around the city, on Sunday (20/11/2022).

Even though previously the local police did not give permission for the convoy, because they were worried that unwanted things would happen, they ignored this. Thousands of residents continue to conduct confoi using motorbikes and cars.

Thousands of these citizens also brought along the flags of the countries they favored in the World Cup later.

The convoy of thousands of residents welcoming the World Cup event brought traffic to a halt in the city.

Even though it was feared that unwanted things would happen between the team's supporters, the convoy's action took place in an orderly and safe manner.
