London midwives take to the streets over 'critically unsafe' maternity services
London midwives staged a demonstration and rally to highlight concerns over chronic low staffing levels and working conditions which lead to 29 out of 30 recently qualified midwives to leave the profession (November 20).
Protesters assembled on Parliament Square with placards illustrating the dire state of affairs in NHS maternity services and the effect on mental health of staff, as the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) estimate that the UK has a shortage of 3500 midwives.
On the 11th November, the RCM - for only the second time ever, balloted 30,000 members over pay, as the workforce is increasingly affected by the cost-of-living crisis.
