Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra australis) are a common, widespread waterbird in Australia, inhabiting a range of slow-moving aquatic habitats with abundant vegetation. Coots breed in the southern Spring and Summer, sometimes having two broods in a season. New hatchlings have mostly black down, with yellow-orange-tipped down on the head and neck. The top of the head is bare, exposing the top of the skull and eyes. Both parents feed the chicks that are brooded on the nest for 3-4 days after hatching, after which they usually swim to follow a parent, begging to be fed. This nest in a Paperbark tree (Melaleuca rhaphiophylla) contained four chicks, two of which are out of sight below the nest. One of the chicks in the nest moved to the edge several times when an adult approached, hoping to be fed.
