Nottinghamshire police have launched a murder investigation after two children and their mother died in a flat fire in Nottingham, England.

Firefighters rescued the children but the two girls aged 1 and 3 were later pronounced dead at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He is also being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

The girl's mother, a 28-year-old woman, is in a critical condition in hospital, police confirmed.

Nottinghamshire Police and Fire investigators from Nottinghamshire fire and rescue service believe the fire was started deliberately at the flat on Fairisle Close, Clifton in Nottingham at around 3am on Sunday 20th November 2022. A man in his 30s has been arrested and is being questioned by police.

The investigation is active and police continue to look for evidence and witnesses who might be able to offer assistance.
