Exiled Chinese dissident arrested for anti-Xi Jinping protest during APEC summit in Bangkok
A brave Chinese dissident was arrested for staging an anti-Xi Jinping protest alone during the APEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.
The United Nations-registered refugee, Li Nanfei, was detained by police on November 18 for holding up a placard in front of the United Nations office in Bangkok and slamming the Peking despot, who was attending the meeting hosted by Thailand this year.
Li's sign read: 'Emperor Xi, give up the dictatorship in China! Give the people their freedom!'
The protester then marched towards a hotel near the Chinese embassy's office and resumed broadcasting his protest on social media.
Other clips show Li being transported to the police station and sitting behind bars following his arrest.
Police were allegedly holding him on suspicion of illegal immigration as he could not show them his passport.
He said that he was inspired by a similar protest last month, where a Chinese local unfurled a banner along a Beijing flyover calling for Xi Jinping to be deposed days before the Chinese Communist Party's national congress took place.
Speaking to reporters from his cell, Li said: 'If there are people like me waiting to welcome him whenever Xi Jinping goes anywhere, then he won't be able to go anywhere, and will have to stay in China, rather than going overseas to harm other people.'
His phone has since been confiscated by police and immigration officers, who have yet to comment on his case.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt had asked demonstrators to refrain from disrupting the APEC summit - but violent clashes with police followed, leaving dozens injured.
Thailand hosted the APEC summit this year, with world leaders gathering at Bangkok's Queen Sirikit National Convention Center between November 18 to 19.
The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) stated that China's treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang had lead to the 'United States and several other foreign governments' branding China's actions in Xinjiang as 'genocide'.
The United Nations human rights office warned that the actions could 'constitute crimes against humanity'.
