This is the moment a panicked resident jumped off a hammock while a pet dog ran away as a massive wild elephant entered their village.

Jeab Phongpan was resting in the hut while his dog guarded outside their house when the jumbo walked by in Prachin Buri province, Thailand, on November 16.

Shocked by the unexpected presence of the animal, Jeab leapt from the swing with her daughter while her pooch was seen fleeing when the creature reached the front yard.

CCTV footage shows the residents escaping the property as the jumbo passed by.

Resident Jeab said: ‘I was resting with my daughter. We just closed the store. I heard heavy footsteps and when I looked behind my shoulders there was a big animal.

‘I was so scared I jumped off the hammock and shouted for help. It was so big.'

The terrified local added the stealthy jumbo did not make any sound and only noticed the creature when they heard its heavy feet on the ground.

She said: ‘I checked the CCTV again after it happened. We were surprised. My dog was terrified too.

‘The elephant was like a quiet thief walking into the night. I only heard its feet on the ground.'

With the help of neighbours, the park rangers were alerted about the animal sighting. It eventually left the village and disappeared back to the woods.

While no one was hurt, Jeab said she was afraid the elephant could return.

She said: ‘My store is a hut. It could easily collapse if the elephant walked in. I am afraid about the damage if it returned.'

Thailand has an estimated 2,000 Asian elephants living in the wild where they wander freely among protect forests. However, there is often conflict when they come into contact with humans on roads and in villages.

A similar number of elephants are kept in captivity where they work in the tourist industry or get hired out for religious festivals and weddings. A small number still work in commercial logging.
