South African postal workers demand pay increases and an end to retrenchments

South African Post Office (SAPO) workers belonging to the Communication Workers Union (CWU) marched through the streets of Cape Town to parliament. The CWU is an affiliate of COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions), the largest trade union federation in South Africa.

In front of Parliament the postal workers were addressed by Moegamat Vermeulen the Chairperson of the CWU in the Western Cape. According to Vermeulen they union signed a labour agreement with the Post Office in 2020 and workers are still waiting backpay agreed to under that agreement. Vermeulen also called for the SAPO CEO, Nomkhita Mona, to step down. The unions are also accusing the post office of not paying over pension fund and medical aid contributions which are deducted from worker’s salaries.

COSATU is part of the tripartite alliance with the South African Communist Party and South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress. The Post Office is one of the many loss making state-owned enterprises under the management and control of South Africa’s national government.
