A kind cyclist rescued a stray dog stuck in a dirty canal in Colombia.

Diego Ruiz was pedalling through the neighbourhood when he heard the brown pooch crying in Zarzal on November 13.

The cyclist then pulled over and found the dog under the waterway as it struggled to climb back up.

Footage shows Diego reaching his arms to the dog before pulling him to safety.

His friend Gerardo Agudelo said: ‘We don't know how the dog fell on the canal. Maybe it was looking for food and went down but could not climb up.

‘My friend was the one who found him. We heard a dog crying, and you wouldn't see the dog from the bike lanes unless you searched.'

After being pulled back up, the dog ran away to an alley.

Gerardo said the dog was a stray that always roamed the area.

He said: ‘The dog wandered the streets. It was a stray. We always see him around these parts.'
