The Thai Navy rescued a Russian sailor after he lost his right arm in a work accident on a cargo ship in the Gulf of Thailand.

Officers rushed to pick up seaman Kriukov Evgenii, 47, from the Panama-registered ship Lady of Luck which was sailing to Singapore from Chonburi province on November 25 evening.

The voyage was interrupted as the crew awaited a team of doctors and nurses dispatched from the Songkhla Naval Base to administer urgent medical care to the injured worker.

The groups met at the rendezvous point on November 6 morning, with Evgenii brought ashore in Songkhla province at 3:30 pm local time.

He was stretchered into an ambulance and rushed to the Songkhla Hospital where he is currently recovering.

It is unclear how the accident happened.

Jaratkiat Chaiphan, director of Thailand's Maritime Enforcement Command Centre Region 2, said: 'We ordered the immediate medical evacuation of the patient after receiving an emergency call that he had lost his right hand in an accident.'
