An urban explorer has ventured into the peeling, dark corridors and empty cells of a long abandoned juvenile prison in Northern Ireland that was used during the troubles to house 'troubled youths'. During its operating period, stories of extreme violence and restraint against inmates by guards, sectarian abuse and even suicides have made this old prison one with a dark history. In 1972, after a period of great unrest, a group of youths escaped to the roof and threw bricks and other missiles at guards, resulting in the construction of a new, high security wing being built. It was revealed by the guardian in 1994 that the reoffence rate of youths released from this facility was a jaw dropping 89% and by 1997, this had shot up to a solid 100%. An independent inspection by researchers at Queen’s University came to the conclusion that boys at Lisnevin Training School “came in as criminals with low self-esteem and went out as criminals with high self-esteem.”
