London's Trafalgar Square Christmas tree arrives from Norway, sparks controversy over its look
A Christmas tree from Norway arrived in London's Trafalgar Square on Monday (November 28) as part of an annual tradition.
This year is the 75th anniversary of Norway sending a spruce tree to London to thank Britain for its support during the Second World War.
However, in recent years, the look of the tree has been criticised by Londoners and social media users beyond the capital, and this year is no different.
A tweet by the unofficial Larry the Cat Twitter account suggesting the tree had "been transported as hand luggage on Ryanair" has hit over 11,000 likes.
Ahead of the tree's arrival, the British Embassy in Oslo tweeted on November 21, "Disclaimer: The #TrafalgarTree was in perfect condition when it left!"
The deputy leader of Westminster City Council Tim Roca defended the tree, tweeting it was "a wonderful gesture of friendship".
The tree's lights will be switched on in a ceremony on December 1.
