A team of wildlife officials managed to rescue a nilgai that was trapped in a river canal in a village near Mandi Dabwali, Haryana.

A passerby spotted the distressed animal and alerted the team at Azad Yuva Club. A rescue team were sent to the spot and managed to tie a rope around the animal.

Filmed by the club's Secretary Raman Deep, footage from November 8 shows the team pulling the 250-kilogram nilgai from out of the canal.

Once out of the water, the team released the animal.

Deep said: "The nilgai come to graze on the farms here but get chased by the village dogs. They fall into the canal while fleeing.”

Over the last three years, the Azad Yuva Club has saved about 400 animals from the waters.
