A historic Buddhist temple was miraculously left unscathed after an explosive fireworks display that caused alarm during a festival in Thailand.

The Wat Chedi Liam pagoda sustained only gunpowder stains following the spectacular pyrotechnics show marking the end of the Yi Peng festival in Chiang Mai province on November 9.

The show raised concern among spectators, who were worried the ancient temple may have been damaged by the rockets that flew astray.

The incident sparked a probe by Chiang Mai's 7th Regional Office of the Fine Arts Department.

Terdsak Yenchura, director of the department's archaeological conservation group, said after an inspection that no evidence of damage was found following the fireworks display.

He added that the Fine Arts Department would advise the monks with guidelines in the future to determine which activities are safe and permitted at the sacred historic sites.

Meanwhile, Wanlop Namwongprom, vice president of Chiang Mai's cultural council, said: 'The temple is an important site in the country registered with the Fine Arts Department. The fireworks show is considered highly inappropriate and we would like to warn the organisers not to do it again.'
