Community-minded locals cleaned up an abandoned Buddhist temple found deep in a Thai jungle.

Dozens of volunteers arrived at the site after hiking a remote woodland trail in Chumphon province on November 21.

They surveyed the area in the forest and began collecting garbage using their brooms.

Footage shows the locals arriving with their families and neighbours before sweeping the grounds.

Pongpat Rungkasam, 31, said: ‘It was such a nice place. It should be preserved for the next generations.'

Locals found wild animals such as cobras, lizards, and spiders living inside the temple which were handled by authorities.

The temple was discovered by a passing hiker and was reported to local officials before clean up began.

It was, however, unclear why the temple had been abandoned.
