A short ceremony and the singing of Christmas carols preceeded the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree switch-on (December 1).

The specially selected tree, standing at 21 metres tall, made its way by sea to Britain, as a gift from Norway, in gratitude for assistance given to the country during the Second World War.

In previous years, the condition of the tree has been mocked by some on social media, but Norweigan officials assured Britons that this time the spruce had left the forest in perfect condition.
