Thousands mourn death of temple elephant in India

Thousand of people in southern India have mourned the death of a temple elephant.

Elephant Lakshmi was donated to the temple in 1995 and had become popular among devotees and foreign tourists.

News of the death spread via social media and people started coming to pay their respects.

The video filmed on December 1 shows crowds of people passing by the dead elephant laid out with flowers and decorations.

The footage then shows the long procession through town to the burial site where the elephant is being laid to rest amid frantic mourners showering flower petals and placing wreaths on the body of the animal.
