Hundreds of protesters stormed the government palace in Mongolia after it was reported that officials were responsible for the theft of coal worth up to $12.9 billion.

Footage from December 5 shows hundreds running up the steps and into the palace.

One protester said: "We want to live well in our country, but today we have nothing to count on. Everyone steals from the people."

For several days now, protests have been going on in Mongolia amid a corruption scandal. People are demanding that those responsible for the massive theft of coal worth up to $12.9 billion, according to various sources, be held accountable.

“We want to live well in our country, but today we have nothing to count on. Everyone steals from the people,” protesters say.

Thousands of people gathered in the central square in Ulaanbaatar. The protesters blocked the city's main thoroughfare and shouted for local deputies and Prime Minister Luvsannamsrein Oyuun-Erdene to come out to them. The Christmas tree was burned in the square.

The protesters tried to break into the Government House. The building is currently under police control.
