An Irish bar in Cape Town has temporarily closed after a video of its alleged racist entry policy went viral on December 6.

The viral video showed a man arguing with staff at the bar after his Black friend was prevented entry by the bouncer.

The bouncer allegedly refused the Black man entry unless he was accompanied by a white person.

The video has been widely shared, with many people lambasting Hank's Olde Irish's owners for their apparent racist policies. The establishment has since issued a statement on its social media pages saying it has opened a criminal case against the man for physically assaulting its owners and staff. It is also in consultation with a well-known criminal defense attorney. The establishment further states it is "extremely concerned for the well-being and safety of our staff involved" and that it won't be commenting further while it conducts an internal disciplinary process looking into these allegations.
