An orca swam over to rocks to say hi to a toddler on the shore by blowing water out of his blowhole
This is the breath-taking moment an orca came with two metres of some rocks to say hello to a toddler.
Sophie Roselt-Hemstalk had taken her son Reef down to Tutukaka Marina, New Zealand, on November 25 when they were met by some amazing visitors.
While her three-year-old sat on the rocks with her and friends, a male broke off from hunting stingray to swim right up to the shore and show off its massive dorsal fin.
The orcas stayed in the area for 30 minutes hunting as Reef ‘educated’ everyone around him of their other name, the killer whale.
Sophie said: “Having spent a fair bit of time with orcas, there has never been a moment where I have felt fear. It just made the encounter even more exciting for the male to come and say ‘hi’ to us.
“Orcas are always on the move hunting, so being in the right spot at the right time brings a massive feeling of happiness and luck.
“Having worked on the ocean for 15 years I know an amazing encounter when I see one. To get to share this with Reef was one of the best ones yet.
“He was excitedly educating the other people on the rocks about the orcas’ other name, ‘killer whale’.
“There were six orcas in the harbour to hunt stingrays. We watched them dive down and try catch them. It looked like the more mature ones were teaching the younger one the ways.
“Stingrays - their liver in particular - are a known favourite of these New Zealand species. They were so preoccupied with feeding they barely took notice of the crowd of people on the rocks.
“This big male did come and check us out which was a beautiful moment between species."
