This is the moment shelves shook violently as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit a store in the Philippines on Wednesday afternoon.

CCTV footage shows the earthquake rocking the grocery in the town of Capalonga in Camarines Norte province on December 7.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it struck northeast of Tinaga Island in the same province at 1:05 pm local time. It was recorded at a depth of one kilometre.

The tremors were felt across the country's central and northern island groups of Visayas and Luzon, where the capital Manila is located.

No damage was expected, but the agency warned locals to brace for aftershocks.

The earthquake triggered temporary evacuations in schools and government offices, including the presidential palace and the Senate in Metro Manila.

The Philippine National Railways has also temporarily suspended all of its trips today.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or casualties.
