Stray dogs have turned mound of leftover sand into pooch apartment block
Stray dogs have turned a mound of leftover sand from a building project into their own pooch apartment block by digging holes in the surface.
The pack of canine architects have gradually crafted their homes in the doggie 'condominium' made of dirt outside a temple in Lopburi province, Thailand.
Footage shows how the strays rest in the anthill-like structure, which even has individual burrows for them to nestle deep inside to escape the scorching heat or harsh rain.
Resident Khun Joyce spotted the dogs milling around the sand pile while on her way to work on November 28. She took pictures of the astonishing feat of canine engineering, who drew attention online to the dogs.
Joyce said: ‘I couldn't stop laughing when I saw what the stray dogs built outside the temple. It looked almost like a condominium.
'They even dug holes to make a place to rest in when it rains.
'These dogs would run away whenever I tried to touch them. They all live together and survive on whatever the villagers feed to them.'
The land is believed to be owned by a local who began clearing the area last month while trying to sell the area. However, for now the dogs have it their home.
There are estimated to be around 300,000 stray street dogs in the capital Bangkok and some 800,000 across the country. Sometimes they congregate around Buddhist temples where monks feed them every day.
They are largely harmless and comfortable around humans, with just three rabies cases and deaths reported in 2020.
