A coal mine explosion killed ten people today (December 9) in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The blast was caused by a buildup of gases.

This aerial footage captured the images of the incident. The video also shows emergency services at the scene of the privately owned mine and the bodies of the victims being removed from the site.

According to Octavianto, a man working for the Basarnas Padang Search and Rescue Office, only four people were found alive.

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit, First Inspector Ferliyanto Pratama, said the mine explosion occurred Friday morning at around 8.30 Western Indonesia Time.

The Joint Team evacuated the bodies of 10 victims who died after a coal mine exploded in Indonesia.

Footage filmed in Sawahlunto City, West Sumatra Province today (December 9), shows the bodies of miners being removed from the pit to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Head of the operational section of the Basarnas Padang Search and Rescue Office, Octavianto, said 10 victims of the coal mine explosion accident were found dead, and 4 rescued.

Head of the criminal investigation unit, Sawahlunto resort police, First Inspector Ferliyanto Pratama, said the mine explosion occurred Friday morning at around 08.30 WIB.

The explosion is thought to have occurred due to the high level of methane gas in the 200 meter deep hole.

Sparks from inside the mine pit are suspected of triggering the explosion. "Where did the sparks come from, we are currently investigating," Pratama added, adding that the explosion caused a landslide in the mine pit and buried the workers.

For further investigation the police set up a police line around the mine site.
