Police are investigating a fire that destroyed a ferry on Thai holiday island Phuket on Sunday.

The blaze broke out on the tourist boat Sea Angel Beyond moored at the Khlong Tha Chin Port in Phuket on December 11 morning.

Bystander footage shows dark smoke billowing from burning watercraft as it was doused by responders.

Witnesses said the fire erupted from the vessel's bow, but firefighters doused it before it could spread to the ship's fuel tanks.

One crew member onboard during the fire escaped unharmed. No casualties or injuries were reported.

Phuket governor Narong Woonciew said: 'The fire broke out at 7:30 am at a pier on Ko Siray in tambon Ratsada and was quickly brought under control.'

The Sea Angel Beyond - a 49.5-metre-long ferry with a capacity of 490 passengers and 29 crew members - was found to be owned by the Sea Angel Cruise company.

Officers believe an electric system malfunction sparked the fire. Further investigation is underway.
