Hundreds of locals from Central Papua Province, Indonesia rioted on December 12 and set fire to establishments reportedly due to hoax information stating that a number of residents in the area died because of food poisoning from goods that were purchased at a market.

Emotions peaked when a resident reportedly fainted after buying clothes at the market. Locals accused the traders of putting poison on the clothes, causing the victim to faint. The angry masses then reacted by setting fire to the traditional market. Mobs also attacked a number of security forces.

As a result of the arson and attack, approximately 50 kiosks and nine motorcycles were burned down and four people were injured, one of whom was a member of the TNI.

Police said 11 people were arrested and they are currently under investigation.
